I always takes two. We all heard and were astonished when we learned about another case were a person who had gotten Mesothelioma as a result of working with the material on his job, and now was compensated by his former employer for his suffering as the court issued a ruling accordingly.
A few months back ago an asbestos lawsuit caught the eye of the public. Supposedly, a Georgia based company who had allegedly paid close to $100 million dollars in asbestos settlements is now accusing health care professionals, affiliated testing companies and their lawyers of misconduct.
It is not unprecedented that defendant in asbestos cases start firing back over to the other side. However, this approach also bears a risk within. There was a case back in 1995 or 1996 where a relatively large company sued a laboratory that specializes in asbestos testing, but was eventually forced to settle in a confidentiality agreement which called compensating for other pending asbestos claims.
Further to that, suspicions surfaced that allegations of plaintiff lawyers bribing doctors in order to issue made up evidence and tweak lab reports might be actually true. Other Health Care Professionals were accused of knowingly providing data from unrelated patients to asbestos lawyers, to help them strengthening their cases.
Well, this of course is against the law. In order to fully understand the problem, we have to see the whole picture. Approximately 4 out of a 100 former employees who had been working in the asbestos manufacturing industry or in jobs with high exposure to the material, will eventually develop an asbestos induced illness, such as Mesothelioma or lung cancer.
And each asbestos related claim is estimated to cost an average of $ 52,000. A big portion of that money goes straight to attorney fees, as you can imagine. It's good business. Some say with a sense of sarcasm: "Mesothelioma cases - or any asbestos related case for that matter- became a lucrative enterprise."
As a cancer patient myself, I unfortunately can attest to the fact that cancer is a very expensive thing to deal with, even if you are fortunate enough to be covered by a good insurance plan. There are always tons of uncovered out of pocket expenses, like co-pays, medically related travel and first and foremost, costs for treatments. And to matters even worse, my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer about seven months before I received my cancer news. In some months our out of pocket expenses exceed $ 4.000,- .
I mention this because it upsets me, that because of some ruthless and greedy people, we as the people cant' get a hold of our medical costs. It doesn't matter if you have Mesothelioma or any other cancer, or diabetes or just a bad cold. We all have to deal with the astronomically high costs for drugs and medical treatment.
It's always the same. Just because of some already "rich beyond belief" people who want more money and therefore abuse the system, the costs for everything will rise higher and higher. And at the end of the day, we have to pay for that. And I had enough already and I'm pretty sure you are with me on that one, right?
