Home Care Facilities Promote Healthy Living

By Jen Pursens

Baby boomers have reached the time in their lives when support, resources and social interaction through home care services are necessary for good health. This is important, especially if there is a diagnosis of diabetes. There are a few forms of diabetes, but it mainly comes in three types.

The first type of diabetes is Type I, which is mostly those who are dependent on insulin. Type II diabetes usually does not occur until after the age of forty-five or so. Type III, also called gestational diabetes, is typically brought on during pregnancy.

With enrollment, seniors fifty five and older will meet other people their own age, with an added benefit of wellness screenings, such as blood pressure checks, support groups, and care for specific medical conditions such as diabetes.

To help with your fitness and other health concerns, senior home care agencies provide speakers and other teachers to help with classes like aerobics and yoga. No matter your age, you can stay in shape and be active.

Fitness goals are more easily reached when done with others, because moral support encourages willpower. Everything is more fun with a friend. For example, learning and then trying out new diabetic recipes for one another, creates in turn, a healthier lifestyle.

Other forms of exercise are dancing, such as modern dance or dance lessons. There are billiards, pottery, crafts and volunteer services to assist the community, to help them feel that sense of belonging. Health is more than nutrition and exercise, it is friendship, socializing, learning something new each day and finding those who share a common interest with one another. With so many different activities, through home care services, there is bound to be lasting friendships and more.

Some seniors have a desire to learn how to use a computer, because they never had the time before. At home care services, computer training classes are available. Maybe other seniors would like to knit, crochet, sew or make quilts. There are classes and groups for that too. There are book clubs, poetry, and so much more.

A home care service is a great place to get the most out of your activities. You can create friendships and hone talents you never knew you had. Start living today.
